Harm Reduction Practices at Sistering
At Sistering we recognize that drug use is a complex issue. While abstinence may work for some women, we recognize that it may not be realistic or possible for everyone. Harm reduction is a set of non-judgmental policies, practices and programs which aim to enhance skills, knowledge, resources and support that people need to live happier safer lives. Harm reduction is a way to reduce the harms around risky activity (illegal drug use, sex, sex trade). This approach tries to ensure that drug users get the same access to health care, housing and supports as non-drug users.
W.H.E.W. (Women’s Harm Reduction Education Works) is a support group for women users, their friends and allies. W.H.E.W. acts to provide support, activities and education to women users and their community. W.H.E.W’s mission is to help improve the lives of women who use drugs by providing education and safer options/choices while building community amongst members. W.H.E.W. also works towards reducing the stigma and discrimination many women face as drug users. W.H.E.W. meets as a larger group on the third Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome.
