A Message to Our Community

To our community, supporters, partners, volunteers, and neighbours,

I want to provide an update on the current labour disruption at Sistering and what it means for the people who rely on our services.

As of May 25, unionized employees represented by OPSEU Local 540 have begun strike action. We respect our staff, the collective bargaining process, and the important role our employees play in delivering care and support to women, trans, and non-binary people experiencing poverty, homelessness, and marginalization.

During this time, our priority remains clear: maintaining essential services for the people who depend on us every day.

Sistering’s 24-Hour Drop-In at 962 Bloor Street West remains open and operational. Essential services continue to be available, including meals, rest and respite space, washroom and hygiene access, harm reduction supports, and crisis and basic-needs assistance. Case support services for clients living in the community also continue, although some services may be adjusted based on available staffing.

At this time, the Parkdale Drop-In at 220 Cowan Avenue is temporarily closed. Clients who regularly access services at that location have been directed to alternative supports within their community.

We recognize that labour disruptions can create uncertainty for clients, volunteers, partners, and community members. We are working diligently to minimize disruptions wherever possible while ensuring that our spaces remain safe, welcoming, and responsive to urgent needs.

To our volunteers and supporters: thank you for your patience and understanding. Some volunteer activities and site access arrangements may be temporarily adjusted. If changes affect a scheduled volunteer shift or activity, a member of our team will reach out directly.

To our broader community: your support matters now more than ever. We remain committed to serving those who rely on Sistering while continuing to engage in the collective bargaining process in good faith.

We appreciate the compassion, solidarity, and understanding that our community continues to show during this challenging time. We will share updates as more information becomes available.

Thank you for standing with Sistering and the people we serve.

Sincerely,

Volletta Peters, PhD
