Labour Disruption Update

Sistering is currently experiencing a labour disruption involving unionized employees represented by OPSEU/SEFPO Local 540.

We share the broader concern about chronic underfunding in the community services sector. Long-term, sustainable funding is essential to fair compensation, workforce stability, and reliable services for people who rely on community-based supports

We know this is a difficult and emotional time for many people connected to Sistering, including employees, clients, volunteers, donors, partners, neighbours, and community members. We also know that people who care deeply about Sistering may have questions about how the organization is responding.

Our employees are central to Sistering’s work. We recognize the care, skill, and trusted relationships they bring to clients every day. We respect employees’ right to participate in lawful strike action and remain committed to good-faith bargaining toward a fair and sustainable agreement.

Sistering does not see support for employees and support for clients as competing responsibilities; both are central to our mission.

During the labour disruption, Sistering continues to provide critical services to clients who rely on the organization for crisis and basic needs support, meals, rest and sleeping space, hygiene supports, harm reduction services, and other essential assistance. Some services have been adjusted during this period, and operations continue to be monitored closely.

Staffing and operational decisions during a labour disruption are difficult and are not made lightly.  Our focus is on maintaining critical supports for clients while respecting the collective bargaining process and the rights of employees.

Sistering does not condone unsafe conduct by anyone involved in or affected by the labour disruption. We remain focused on supporting a safe environment for clients, employees, volunteers, service providers, and community members.

We understand that labour disruptions can affect trust and relationships. As we move through this period, Sistering remains committed to reaching a negotiated resolution and to supporting employees, clients, and the organization through the transition ahead.

We will continue to share updates as the situation evolves.

Sincerely,

Volletta Peters, PhD
